Catholic Churches and Schools on the West Side
of the City of  Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan

  1853 Hart map

This map shows the general locations of the future St. James, St. Marys and St. Adalbert.

St. James

St. James is at 745 Bridge St. The school was built in 1923 and closed fairly recently (2010).

St. James is known for the best Lenten Fish Fry!

St Mary's

St. Mary's School closed many years ago. I think it may have been the first to close as it's parish was decimated
about 1965 by the freeway which now nearly encircles this historic church. I used to attend Christmas concert here with my friend Roberta Bernard, who attended this church and school. I was amazed to see that the church was full of bones. All the Christmas Carols were sung in German.
