This 1894 Polk Map shows the school districts in color

Districts are numbered in chronologic order by date of origin.

District #7, 10, and 13  are not shown. District 7 was annexed by the City of Grand Rapids in 1891. The debts from District #13 was absorbed by the City in 1891.

Green - School District #4 NE Section 11 shows a school on NE 1/4 of Sec 11 at the corner of East Paris and Burton.

Yellow - School District Fractional #5 is just the farm of Agnes Prescott. School must be in Grand Rapids or Cascade  township.

Green - School District #6 fractional shows a school SW 1/4 of Sec 18 on the T Lynch farm at the corner of Division and 36th. Most likely included part of Wyoming Twp..

Yellow - School District #1  con't

Pink  - School District #5 shows a school SW 1/4 of Sec10 on the C. Patterson farm at the corner of Breton and 28th. This school was still standing until about 1970 when it was replaced by an emergency clinic.

Yellow -School District #8 shows a school on the VanderBilt farm  NW 1/4 of Sec 13 at the corner of East Paris and 28th.

 Pink - School District #8 shows a school on A Potter farm NE 1/4 Sec 31 southwest of  the corner of Eastern and 52nd.

Yellow - School District  #3 shows a school on I D Davis farm NE 1/4 of Sec 29 at the corner of Kalamazoo and 44th.

Green - School District #9 shows a school on S B Shafer farm NE 1/4 of Sec 27 at the corner of Shafer Dr and 44th.

Purple - School District #12 fractional does not show a school which is in Cascade or Gaines or Caledonia Twp.

School District #1 - SW 1/4 Section 8 annexed to City around 1916

1839 - Begins in a home on Division Avenue. First director is Barney Burton.
1894 - On Eastern Avenue south of Alger next to property of A H Guild 95A
1907 - On Eastern Avenue south of Alger
            School is known as Seymour.

c. 1914 a new school is built on Alger east of Easter and renamed Alger.
Old school becomes Seymour Christian and is moved to Nevada street. .
School was annexed by the City is best known as Alger.

The 1894 map shows this school as District #4 and in the NE 1/4 of Section 11 near the farm of George Palmer. 
The 1907 Ogle map shows this school right across the street from the James Murphy Farm. 
This school was called the Murphy School then the Schumann school and this is the school my dad attended.

(I thought this would be Maple Grove, the old county poor farm but that is in Section 16.
The county poor farm on Section 16 is surrounded by the H B Rathbun heirs. I wonder if Rathbun did a switch-a-roo resulting in a relocated Poor Farm?)
