City of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan created in 1850

Creation of streets within boundary changes.

The City began by annexing four sections of Grand Rapids and Walker Townships. Early Michigan law allowed the creation of streets along township/range lines which run true unlike streets which must circumvent the terrain: hills and streams. So streets are not the actual boundaries but roughly correspond to the true boundary.
