- Stocking Avenue was created by Mr. Stocking to lead directly due north from Bridge Street to his home at the end of Walker. He said he just knew and did not need to use a compass. Walker Avenue is an old Indian trail and they didn't use a compass either.
The West side is very old. I remember inspecting a home off Broadway Ave NW and in the basement, which had to be reached using a very old, narrow winding "stairway" via a trap door, I discovered that the center room was really a log cabin and other rooms had been added on, one by one, over the years.
