In 1912 the City of Grand Rapids adopted a street naming and
house numbering system still in use today This information
was published in the 1912 City Directory. I have added subsequent name changes.
I have only mentioned the 1912 change to differentiate same names. Some of these streets are outside the city limits so the avenue or street designation does not apply until either annexed by the City of Grand Rapids or the county's adoption in 1943 Kent County street name changes. Later changes were made particularly in 1920 when there was an attempt to merge the names of short streets together as if they were one long continous street that jogged. Changes were made during annexations so as to avoid duplicate names or to match the existing City name of the street it would now connect to. Even though the street no longer exists physically the right-of-way may still exist. For instance, when the freeway was created in 1965 it may be running over a former surface street whose right-of-way is being used by the new freeway. The boundaries of the City in 1912 were along: Bristol Avenue on the west
