St Alphonsus

224 Carrier St NE

St. Alphonsus, Grand Rapids

SS

Tanner Taylor 1857

St. Alphonsus was organized in 1888. GRAHC It began with a donation from John Clancy that included the land for St. John's orphanage across the street.Ancona Please note that Lafayette ended and did not go through until later. Redemptorist priests were invited to administer the parishAncona  (Need to double check if Alphonsus was their founder. Father Hecker began as a Redemptorist who were from Germany and when they would not let Father Hecker preach in English he formed the Paulists who administer St. Andrews Cathedral.)

A combination school and church building was completed in 1889. Ancona

A new church was consecrated on 22 Dec 1909. Ancona By Harry J. Rill of Detroit and Christian G. Vierheilig GRAHC Major renovations were made in 1978. Ancona

Then this combination building became the school. My speculation.  An addition to the school was built in 1914. Another addition was made to the school in 1957.  The 1899 and 1914 buildings were replaced in 1964 when St. Alphonsus had the largest enrollment of any parochial school in the diocese. Ancona
