Section 30 of Grand Rapids Township Streets often run along section lines but streets vary, section lines do not. Section lines are represented by Michigan, Eastern, Wealthy, Division. The E/W 1/4 line is Fulton. The N/S 1/4 line is North and Madison. The northern 1/4 1/4 line runs between Lyon and Fountain. The southern 1/4 1/4 line is Cherry. The western 1/4 1/4 line is Jefferson Ave. The eastern 1/4 1/4 line is Union.
Allen Park Place - part of the University Lot of Coit & Curtis developed by common usage running between lots 855 and 862 as shown in 1938 Steinman's Assessor Plat # 33. Vacated c. 1960 for a parking lot for Calvary Church then housed in the former East Bridge/Michigan St School. Now the site of a medical building. Antisdel - platted in 1890 Antisdel & Littlefield Sub of Coit & Curtis Lots 33 &34 running north from Lyon Atwood - created as Mechanic from Union to Grand in 1887 Allyn's Add. Extended eastward as Mechanic in 1890 Giddings 2nd. Extended as Mechanic to Eastern (Cemetery) in 1890 Somer's Add. Renamed Atwood in 1904. Avalon Terr - Baldwin - Barclay - created in 1850 Kendall running from Fulton to Crescent. Extended to Michigan in 1867 Kendall's 2nd. Benson - created in 1873 Colton's Add running from Crescent to Michigan. Bostwick - created as unnamed in 1834 Campau Addition running from Library to Fountain. Dexter Bruce - created as Brown's Court running south from Lyon in 1904 Clark's Add. Continued through to Hawthorne as Brown in 1911 Muir & Bellamy's Sub. Renamed Bruce in 1912. Campbell Pl - created as Camp Ground Street running from Lyon to an alley in Lyon St. Sub of Coit & Curtis. My grandmother lived at the corner of this street and the alley. Cass - created in 1848 Morrison's Add running from Morrison to Wealthy. Vacated for St. Mary's Hospital in 1973. Charles - created in 1857 Holbrook's Add running from Cherry to Wealthy. Cherry - Continued as Ellsworth on 1836 Kent Plat and as Cherry on 1868 Bostwick Add running from Division to Jefferson. Platted as Morrison in 1848 Morrison's Add from Jefferson to Lafayette. Shown as Cherry on 1853 map. Platted as Cherry from Jefferson to Madison in 1856 Smith's Sub. Platted as Rose from Union to Cherry in 1857 Holbrook's Add. Back-filled as Cherry at College in 1861 William's Add. Back-filled as Rose from College to Paris in 1866 Hoyt's Add and as Cherry from Paris to Union in 1872 Northrup's Add . . Continued to Eastern in 1871 Southwick's Add. Claremont - created as an unnamed alley in 1850's Kendall's Add running from Willow Ct to newly-named Victory Pl. . Clifton - created as Brigg's Ct in 1894 Briggs Sub of Coit & Curtis Lot 19 running from Lyon ending at former location of Fountain School now Central High School. Vacated in 1978. College - mostly shown from Fulton to Michigan by common usage in Steinman's Assessors Plats. Only shown as platted a short distance between Lyon and Fountain in 1870 Wood's and 1872 Beals Add. South from Fulton as common usage as shown in Steinman's Shown north of Cherry in 1861 William's Add. Platted from Cherry to Wealthy in 1866 Hoyt's Add. Conant Terr - Crescent - created as Bronson in 1836 Kent Plat and Dexter Fraction running from Division to just past Ransom or the 1/4 1/4 line. Extended as Bronson from 1/4 1/4 line to just past Prospect, the 1/4 line, in 1850 Kendall's Add. Extended as Brunson to about Union in 1855 Coit & Curtis. Extended to Grand as Bronson in 1873 Colton's Add. Extended to Eastern as Cumings in 1904 Clark's Add. Bronson renamed Crescent in 1885, Cumings in 1911. (a very old map shows a Dr. Cumings owns a large lot northeast of the cemetery). Crescent - created as a crescent-shaped dirt road around a steep hill connecting Bostwick to Division. The northern wing was replaced by a sidewalk for the first Butterworth Hospital then located south of Bostwick. Crescent Park is on top of the hill with a stairway leading directly down. Division - The Township Line. Continued from just north of Fountain to Bridge in the 1836 Kent Plat and Dexter Fraction. Donovan Ct - East Place - created as East Ct running south off Lyon in 1904 Clark's Add. East Park Place - Not platted running from Fulton to Library alongside the east side of the former courthouse square.. Eastern NE - created as East it runs along the section line separating section 30 from 31 EXCEPT that portion from Fulton to Fountain that was created as Cemetery Street when the Fulton Street Cemetery was extended WEST of the section line in 1864. This cemetery plat included Cemetery Street. The actual section line runs through the cemetery at the eastern end of blocks 10-13. This section line was also the City boundary until 1857 when land was annexed to Fuller but this annexation was rescinded. The Section line along which Eastern ran remained the City boundary until 1891. Cemetery was renamed N. East in 1888. East was renamed Eastern in 1912. Eastern SE - Platted north of Wealthy in 1871 Southwick's Add. Evans - shown as Buckeye from Union to Eastern in 1857 Holbrook's Add. Fitch Pl -Created south off Lake Dr in the 1904 Fitch Add. Mr. Fitch had a hunting lodge here about 1840. The home was later occupied by a Rev. Holt whose spinster daughter, a seamstress, lived at the Isabella Home at the corner of Cherry and Eastern. There is a state historical market at this house. Fountain - continued from Division to Ransom in 1835 Campau Add. Continued from the 1/4 1/4 line to the 1/4 line in 1850 Kendall's Add. Extended to about Union in 1855 Coit & Curtis. Extended to Grand in 1887 Allyn's Add. Extended to Eastern in 1890 Somer's Add. Fulton - Not shown but probably existed in 1835 Campau Add. Extended from Division to 1/4 1/4 line in 1868 Kendall. Extended from 1/4 1/4 line to 1/4 line in 1850's Kendall Add 1852 Campaus 2nd. Extended to about Union in 1855 Coit & Curtis. Extended to Grand 1887 Allyn's Add. Extended to Eastern (Cemetery) in 1890 Somer's. Gay - Ghilda - created as unnamed alley in 1850 Kendall's Add running from just north of Fulton to just south of Michigan.. Goldsboro - shown in 1938 Steinmann's Assessor Plat #34 running from Lyon ending at former location of Fountain now Central High School. Vacated 1978. Originally went through to Fountain as Lyon Pl before Central was built in 1911. Goodrich - platted as Fsm on 1868 Bostwick's Add running from Division to Jefferson. Grand - created in 1873 Colton's Add running from Michigan to Crescent. Skipped from Crescent south then started up to Fulton but a little farther east from the 1/4 line in 1887 Allyn's Add. Back-filled from Crescent to match Colton's location in 1890 Innes Add without connecting to Allyn's. By 1904 Clark's Add Grand goes through, (lot 13 Innes Add) The land east of Grand in Allyn's Add was mostly unplatted. Hawthorne - created as Julia in 1887 Allyn's Add running from Union to Grand. Extended to Eastern in Muir & Bellamy as well as Provin and by common usage as shown in Steinman's Assessor Plat #39. Henry - created in 1857 Holbrook's Add running from Cherry to Wealthy. Innes - created in 1890 Innes Add running from Union to Grand. Extended to Eastern in 1904 Clark's Add. Irving Pl - created as Holland St in 1869 Abel. Vacated in 1973 for St. Mary's Hospital. James - created in 1857 Holbrook's Add running from Cherry to Wealthy. Jefferson - created as South in 1848 Morrison's Add running from Cherry to Wealthy. John - created in 1850 Kendall's Add running from Barclay to Lafayette. Kellogg - Platted commencing in the center of the highway running past the late residence of E. B. Bostwick, Esq. (deceased) at the S. E. corner of land now owned by Wm. B. Ledyard. Kellogg runs from Union to Eastern in 1874 Kellogg's Sub. Lots 1-9 on Cherry St owned by Mr. Kellogg. Eventually extended through the center of 1873 Berkey's Add to Eastern after-the-fact. Lafayette - created as Caroline in 1848 Morrison's running from Cherry to Wealthy. Created as Lafayette in 1850 Kendall running north from Fulton to Crescent. Extended south from Fulton to Washington in 1852 Campau 2nd. Extended from Washington to Cherry in 1856 Smith's Sub. Extended north to Michigan in 1867 Kendall's 2nd. LaGrave - Created in 1836 Kent Plat running from Fulton to Cherry extended to Wealthy in 1868 Bostwick Add. Lake Dr - shown as Thornapple west of Eastern in 1857 Holbrook's Add. Shown as Lake at Holbrook's former residence at the corner of Eastern in the 1873 Berkey's Add. Library - created as unnamed in 1835 Campau Add commonly known as Park running from Division to Ransom along the north side of Court House Square. Lockwood - created in 1890 Somer's Add running westward from Eastern (Cemetery). Lyon - continued from Division, the township line, to the 1/4 1/4 line in 1836 Kent Plat and Dexter Fraction. . Extended from the 1/4 1/4 line to the 1/4 line in 1850 Kendall's Add. Extended to about Union in 1855 Coit & Curtis. Extended to Eastern in 1904 Clark's Add. Madison - The 1/4 Line. Created as Charlotte in pre-1860 Welton's Add running from Cherry to Wealthy. Continued as Charlotte in 1856 Smith's Sub running from Cherry to Washington. Maple - platted but name crossed-out on 1868 Bostwick's Add running from Division to Jefferson. Michigan - The township line. Continued as Bridge from Division to the 1/4 1/4 line in 1836 Kent Plat and Dexter Fraction. Extended as Bridge from the 1/4 1/4 line to the 1/4 line in 1867 Kendall's 2nd Add. Extended as Bridge to about Union in 1855 Coit & Curtis. Extended to Grand in 1873 Colton's Add. Extended to Eastern in 1904 Clark's Add. Monroe - extended from Division to Fulton as State Road in 1868 Bostwick's Add. Morris - Morrison - Platted as North in 1848 Morrison's Add running from Jefferson to Lafayette. Shown as Morrison on 1853 map. Vacated for St. Mary's Hospital in 1973. Oakley - shown in 1938 Steinmann's Assessor Plat #34 running from Lyon to Crescent. Probably originally dead-ended. Oakes - continued from Division to Jefferson in 1836 Kent Plat and 1868 Bostwick Add. Packard - created in 1857 Holbrook's Add running from Lake Dr to Cherry. Paris - Platted from Cherry to Wealthy in 1866 Hoyt's Add. Parkwood - platted as Oak in 1890 Innes Add running from Union to Grand. Renamed in 1899. Portsmouth - created by common usage as shown in 1938 Steinman's Assessor Plat #37 running from Fulton to Fountain. Prospect - created in 1850 Kendall running from Fulton to Crescent. Extended south from Fulton to Washington in 1852 Campau's 2nd. Extended north to Michigan in 1867 Kendall's 2nd. Created as Ann in 1856 Smith's Sub from Washington to Cherry. Extended south from Cherry to Wealthy as Smith St in pre-1860 Welton's Add. Called Smith in 1869 Abel's Sub. Ransom - Ransom created unnamed from near Fulton to past Fountain in 1835 Campau Add. Extended to Bridge in 1836 Kent Plat and Dexter Fraction. Extended to Fulton in 1868 Bostwick. Rochester Court - running east off Jefferson. Vacated 1973 for St. Mary's Hospital. (double check) Sheldon NE - Not platted but known as West Park Place running from Fulton to Library along the west side of the former courthouse square. Probably renamed Sheldon at the same time that Park Place was renamed Library in 1912 but then why wasn't East Park Place renamed Jefferson? Sheldon SE - Created in 1836 Kent Plat running from Fulton to Cherry extended to Wealthy in 1868 Bostwick Add. Shepard Ct - shown in Steinmann's Assessor Plat #49 running west from Lafayette. Vacated in 1973 for St. Mary's Hospital. Stanley Terrace - private road created after-the-fact in 1887 Allyn's Add. State - Tyler Ct - ran paraell but farther north than Willow Ct. Double Check Union NE - extended from Bridge to Crescent in 1873 Colton's Add. Skipped from Crescent south then from E/W 1/4 line to Fulton in 1887 Allyn's Add. Filled-back from 1/4 line to Crescent in 1890 Innes Add. Union SE - Platted from Cherry to Wealthy in 1872 Northrup's Add. Victory Ct - created as Barclay Place in Lot 19 of 1867 Kendall's 2nd. This dirt alley began at Crescent between two apartment houses and ended at Claremont. Renamed Victory Pl in 1921. By the 1912 code it should have been renamed Victory Ct which is what it was called contrary to CE's records. It had sidewalks and there were about 4 or 6 very small houses. It ran behind my home at 217 Crescent St and my friend Audrey Lewis lived there. Her mother was the Brownie leader. It and the surrounding area including my home were replaced by a heliport and parking lot for Butterworth Hospital. Victory Pl - a narrow platted dirt alley in 1867 Kendall's 2nd Add running from Crescent to Lafayette. It was a service alley for commercial buildings facing Michigan. There were no homes on it or room for homes. At the Lafayette end was Gordon Food Service. At the Crescent end it separated a fire barn on Lot 20 from Coat and Apron Laundry where LaWanda's father worked. That portion left over east of Claremont after Butterworth Hospital expanded is erroneously identified as Victory Pl. Vineland Pl - a narrow platted alley in 1867 Kendall's 2nd Add running East off Prospect. Washington - created in 1852 Campau's 2nd running from Lafayette to the 1/4 line. Runs from Jefferson to Madison in 1856 Smith's Sub. Waverly - created as Luce in 1856 Washington's Sub running from State to Cherry. Wealthy - created as Wealthy Avenue in 1848 Morrison's Add running from Jefferson to Lafayette. Extended to Prospect in Steinman's Assessor's Plat. Extended from Prospect to Madison in pre-1860 Welton's Add. Platted from Union to Eastern in 1857 Holbrook's Add. Back-filled College to Paris in 1866 Hoyt's Add and Paris to Union in 1872 Northrup's Add . Weston - continued as Island in 1836 Kent Plat and in 1868 Bostwick Add running from Division to Jefferson. Willow Ct - created as an unnamed alley in 1850 Kendall's Add running from Barclay to Lafayette. Winchester - created as an unnamed alley running from just north of Fountain to Michigan in 1836 Dexter Fraction.
