1891 Annexation of township schools by the City of Grand Rapids The City of Grand Rapids annexed nine schools in 1891; four from Grand Rapids Twp, one from Paris Twp, three from Walker Twp and one from Wyoming Twp. Map References: President's Report: By act of the recent Legislature a territory of about nine square miles, including a population of about ten thousand and containing nine school buildings with thirty school rooms has been added to the district. These schools were many of them ungraded it was a large an daunting amount for the city to receive at one time for digestion into is public school system, but so efficient has been the care bestowed upon them that they are already assimilated, and in any of them may be seen the same spirit, aims and plans manifested as in the oldest schools in the district. We have now thirty-two buildings in our charge. In addition to this, we are, at the present time, renting fourteen rooms. The only reference I was able to find in the Proceedings of
the Common Council (City Commission) reference to this annexation was for
the city surveyor to make suitable maps -- for the upcoming election -- first
Monday in April, 1891 -- for annexed lands by the late act of the Legislature.
March 9, 1891 pg 748. I assume these are the 1/4 section maps in City
Engineers which do not show the schools. 21. Congress From article City Schools From Heading History and the City of GrandRapids From web site: MyCityofGrandRapids.info
