This school began before 1856 in a rented building.
While the school was near the southern end of Ward 1,
most of the students lived in Ward 1 or 3.
Relationships are inferred.

Ward Boundaries:
First Ward - east of the river, west of Division Ave, south of Michigan, north of Wealthy
Third Ward - east of Division, west of Eastern, south of Michigan, north of Wealthy

The 1859 City Directory calls it Primary #2 West Side Division south of Bartlett

On 27 Jun 1861 a permanent site was purchased.

The 1867 City Directory states that it is on South Division, frame building, brick basement. Four teachers, 260 students
