When I was investigating St Adalbert and saw these apartments, I said to myself, "those used to be stores" so of course I had to check.

like brick?), tar and gravel roof on wood. Bldg #2 - 1st floor same as above. Rolled roofing. Bldg #3 - concrete block, concrete foundation and floor, rolled roofing, Bldg 4, 5, 6, 7 - wood frame sheds, dirt floors, concrete foundations, rolled roofing, flat pitch, City Assessor's Card 1936
654 Fourth 1860 Census: two Anna Hoffer - Alpena and Shiawasee Drug store celotex wallboard, walls and ceiling, 10' high in the front, 9' high in the rear, asphalt tile on wood floor in the front, wood floor in rear. central steam heat. Rear portion wood frame, stone foundation, no basement, pine floors, rooled roofing, the NW corner has a pitched roof, the balance flat. Front apt 3 rooms down, 3 bedrooms and bath up, plaster walls and ceiling, 10' high, hardwood floor down, pine up, pine trim. In 1985 a zoning appeal was granted for 648 and 654-656 Fourth ST NW for permanent non-conforming use for five apartments. These are two large commercial type buildings with a parking lot in the rear for about ten cars. Two apartments on the first level. Easement with the neighbor to the west.
