Fulton Cemetery is in Grand Rapids Township

I have to admit that this cemetery fascinates me.  Maybe because I walked past it everyday from school.  Maybe because it was next door to my dentist.  I thought that there had to be a connection.  The early records no longer exist.  On this map furnished by the City Rec Dept, it is important to note that the oldest section is in the center - blocks 1,2,3,4 shown in yellow and then expanded to include blocks 5 and 6 which lie adjacent to Fulton Street shown in purple.  There is no consistency in the numbering.  Although history books talk about a Catholic section I have been unable to discover where that was exactly but perhaps blocks 5 and 6 were the 1/3 Catholic section..  The later additions were platted with the Register of Deeds and are shown separately. These are lots 7,8,9 lying to the north adjacent to Fountain Street, shown in red..  Then lots 10,11,12,13 lying to the west adjacent to newly created Cemetery Street (later renamed Eastern), shown in green. This renaming Cemetery to Eastern in 1888 would cause many people to confuse it with  the section line on which East street ran.  East was renamed Eastern in 1912.  The last addition was to the east, lots 14,15,16, shown in blue.

All the maps are aligned so the top is North. All three addition maps are at the Register of Deeds Office.

The plat below is from Book 1, page 39 in 1862 Blocks 7-9. It was north of the old ground and was along Fountain Street.

The plat below is from Book 1, page 53 in 1864  Blocks 10-13.  The red line marks the section line between 29 and 30. It was west of the old ground along a newly created street called Cemetery now called Eastern.

The plat below is the South East Addition in 1869. Blocks 14,15,16.  It was east of the old ground along a line of houses on Batavia Place.
