City School District #1 School Year 1860-1861 I compared these names to the 1860 Federal Census for Grand Rapids and also looked up some cemetery records: Wilder D Foster 1821-1873 b. NY buried Fulton Street Cemetery, hardware merchant, father of 5
John Ball well-known early founder best known for John Ball Park and Zoo. George Kendall b.c. 1814 Mass, prominent real estate promoter, father of 4 Charles Shepard b.c. 1813 NY, physician, father of 3 James R. McKee - no information For information on each school and list of students in this report, see the links below: Central Grammar, Intermediate and High Schooll By 1856, District #1's primary grades had been expanded beyond Central into new ward schools, two in rented buildings; North Division, South Division, and one owned Fountain. In 1857 additional land south of Wealthy Street was annexed and Primary # 4 was created. By 1860 the primary grades were completely gone from Central. The Annual Report of the East Side provides a listing of primary students enrolled in 1860, the only year it was done. This District would continue to grow, acquire more sites and build new schools.

The pupils also wrote two hundred words of Franklin's "Too Dear for the Whistle," with special reference to penmanship, but all mistakes in spelling were counted against them as also all mistakes make in writing upon other subjects. This rule applied to all the departments.
