History of the Public Schools in the City of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan 1850-2007 Chapter 13: The Dying Years March 1, 2010 Stocking, still viable neighborhood school, has been closed against the protests of the parents. West Leonard, a still viable neighborhood school was closed last year against the protest of the parents.. Central is no longer a high school and they just sold for $1 this modern City High that had been built next door about 20 or 30 years ago after tearing down about 7 beautiful homes under tremendous protest. Only strategic planners are such idiots.
Not a public school but St. Andrews has closed. St. Peter and Paul and St. James closed last year. St. Adalbert's is now a pre-school. St. Alphonsus and St. Isidore's have merged with Blessed Sacrement. St Francis closed earlier. St. Mary's was the first to close as it was most heavily hurt by the freeway installed about 1965. The freeway destroyed the old ethnic neighborhoods. That leaves only Sacred Heart school left open in the central city. We used to create what WE could do TOGETHER for everyone. Now it's charter schools and what ME can do for MY children not yours. Look at ME not us.
