Beckwith School

Section 16 Grand Rapids Township

This school was annexed in 1960 by the City of Grand Rapids. It began in 1860 as a school in Grand Rapids Township School District #11. In 1875, a .73 acre parcel of land was purchased from a William and Maria Beckwith on the corner of Section 16, Leonard Street and Maryland Avenue.

In 1943 additional land to the north was purchased from Benjamin and Maude Robinson as well as the Michigan Trust Company, Trustees under the will of Tom S. Handley, deceased.

In 1955 a survey was done for Beckwith school that included an adjacent parcel of land 82.5 ft x 680 ft in Section 15,

Cost: $5.5 million
Highlights: a $1.7 million addition of six classrooms and a new main enrance, ofice and computer lab; $2.1 million for moderate remodeling of classrooms and updated electric and heating systems, and $175,000 for computers and video equipment.
