Aunt Mamie in Ganges

I just loved visiting my mother's Aunt Mamie. She lived on a farm near Ganges. I loved Lady. She let me hug her.

Aunt Mamie with Lady

My dad took an old vase of Aunt Mamie's and made it into a lamp. I told my mother that was all I wanted from her estate letting my sister know she could have everything else. My sister took the lamp AND everything else. It was green and white. I had a few dishes of Aunt Mamie's and when I became too ill I gave them to my cousin Janet Freeman in Oregon.

My dad would drive down the winding two-lane road, now the Blue Star Highway. We would drive by Saugatuck and I could see the town nestled between wide expanses of water. I would beg my dad to drive us into town but he always refused. He would get so annoyed at the slooooooow farmers. We passed a big white house on top of a big hill - Tara, a restaurant. As an adult I ate at that restaurant and drove into Saugatuck. Sometimes we would stop at this little gas station at the corner of M-89 and buy a square pint of Neapolitan ice cream. Then we would drive up this steep hill and have to be very careful in order to find the drive-way that was cut into a hill. .

Aunt Mamie's house was perched on top of a hill just before the driveway. You could see Lake Michigan from her yard. She and Uncle Nick had a fruit farm and at the end of the day after picking, they'd load it up into Uncle Nick's pickup truck and drive to Pier Cove where it would be loaded up on a steam ship and sent to Chicago.
