Alger 1914 - indication for a new school between Oakdale and Buchanan (don't cross) due to an extension of the street car line. (616) 885-1232 An undated blurry Herald newspaper clipping describes a new school to be called Alger located on Alger Street east of Eastern. It implies it is replacing the old Paris Township Seymour School recently removed from Burton Street and placed on Nevada Street by Eastern Avenue and is known as Seymour Christian School. It goes on to say that Charles W. Garfield has arranged for a museum of relics pertaining to early history of Burton Heights and the early days of this school district at this new Alger school. It goes on to say that Seymour School began in 1839 in a house on Division Avenue. A group of men organized school district No. 1, Paris Township, with Barney Burton as director. This record book is in the Garfield collection. Charles Garfield taught at Seymour School in 1867. 1926 - Grand Rapids Press, 16 February, p. 1. Preliminary plans for the $200,000 Alger school building to be built at Alger and Eastern were submited to the board of education by Williamson, Crow & Proctor, architects, Monday night. The plans were approved and will be ready for bidders within three weeks. The building will be of brick construction, fireproof and two stories. It will have a kindergarten room, two first-grad rooms, thirteen regular class rooms, library, principal's office, nurse's room, manual training room, household arts room, cooking room, an open air room and an assembly room with stage. It will be approximately 169'x168' feet in dimensions. 1977, October 12 the North Kent Reporter "Alger school bell rings 50 years. The school opened in 1927.
