 A Campau plat Subdivision   confirmed by the Bd of Ed map. W 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of Sec 31 T7N R11W in 1855.  Lot 9 became located between McDowell Street (Delaware) and McConnell Ct (Elder Ct)

1874 - purchased a school lot in the 3d Ward, 204 feet on Center street by 200 feet on McDowell (Delaware) street, for the sum of $2,700, (lot 9 of A Campau) and have contracted with Sheridan & Cockerell to furnish all material and erect a brick building, 32 by 74 feet, two stores above a good stone basement, to contain four good-sized room with sittings for 200 pupils, the work to be al finished complete (except seats), including inside blinds and suitable out-houses on or before November 1, 1875, for the sum of $5,21.78.

1875 - Fifth ward, lot purchased recently, corner of Center (Sheldon Ave)  and McDowell (Delaware).  Lot 204 feet on Center by 200 feet on McDowell.  Brick building 32x74 feet, 2 stories above a good stone basement, warmed by stoves, four school rooms with sittings for 200 pupils, suitable halls, stairways and closets. Laid sidewalk.  Occupied in November.  school is on the NW corner of the lot. 

1876 - built fence

1882 - 3rd ward, contract let to Fred C Miller for an addition 12 feet to the east of 32 x 68 main building, two stories with basement, four rooms, large hall and stairway connecting  with the old building.  Ready for occupancy about the first of October.

1883 - Renamed Center Street School

1884 - Water closets (toilet stalls) have been enlarged, cleaned and painted.

 

The 1885 Collar and Greiner map shows this school as possibly lot 9 of  A. Campau's plat :

 

1887 - Value $20,000

1890 -During the year the water closets have been placed in the basements, and connected with the public sewer.  connection has also been made with the city water.

1891 - Tenth Ward.  New steam heating plant ready for use.

1912 - lots 1 and 2 of E.L. McConnell's plat 1871, subdivision of A Campau lots 11 and 12, to the south are added. E L McConnell's plat - Image.  Plans and specifications ready for new building. The site for Central avenue school now having been secured and the type of building decided upon, the architect will proceed with plans for the building, and in all probability the  job can be let by the first of the year. (New building is to the east).

  

                                   

1916 - new building opens

1917 - Sites committee - considering - purchase of a house and lot adjoining.

1921 - additional lots were bought

1921 Annual Report:  Old 11th Ward, lots 1 and 2 and that part of lot 3 lying north of McConnell court of Block 12 of E L McConnell's Addition.  Also the west 200 feet of lot 9 of A Campau's sub-division

 

1953 Sanford Fire Map page 369 shows a new school built in 1915-1916. Lot addresses are shown as 1000 and 1010 Sheldon Ave SE, 100 Delaware St SE. 

1956 -  balance of lot 9 and lot 12 of A Campau's plat  to the east are added.

1960's - lots on the east to Jefferson Avenue and on the south to Highland are added from Doran's Assessor's plat #19 (lot 13 of A Campau).   Doran's #19 - Image

Highlights: a $2.7 million addition of a cafeteria, multi-purpose room and 12 new classrooms; $1.8 million to remodel classsrooms, restrooms, replace part of roof and install new electric and heating systemes, and $262,500 for computers and video equipment.
 

2005: 1000 Sheldon Ave SE  ppn=41-14-31-352-030 part of A. Campau's sub-division and part of block 12 and vacated Elder Ct of McConnell's addition and part of Morgan & Pierce's from Jefferson and Delaware to Sheldon and Highland.

Now used for Public Housing as Sheldon Apartments for the elderly addressed  at 1010 Sheldon Ave..
