Oakdale School This school began on Oakdale Avenue in the NW 1/4 of Sec 5 of Paris Twp Mar 11, 1889 January 6, 1891 Peck and VeenBoer's Addition surveyed by Martin in 1887 for Thomas & Mary Peck and Nelle & Eurana VeenBoer 1891 - annexed by the City of Grand Rapids - 11th Ward, Lot 180 feet on Oakdale Street and 125 feet deep. A new four room frame building, two stories above basement, sittings for 200 pupils, heated by furnaces, well ventilated. $6,500. The addition of two rooms to Oakdale with furnace heat and perfect ventilation. 1895 -Is located in the Eleventh Ward on Oakdale Avenue between Seymour Street (Blaine) and Kalamazoo Avenue. New closets have been erected on the rear of this lot during the vacation. 1907 As this school was not shown on the 1895 Sanborn map and
changed locations by the 1913 Sanborn map, the 1907 Ogle map is included here. 1909 - new lot on Evergreen, Lots 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,21,22 of block 3.. Oakdale Park plat 1887 Oakdale Park - Image Erle (Earl) street renamed Marshall, Seymour renamed Blaine, East renamed Eastern. Original size indicates lots 1,2,6. Need to verify. 1910 - new building opens 1912 - added lots in Block 4 1919 - 8 April, rand Rapids Press, p. 2. Oakdale wants more room - the building is overcrowded, a basement room and a kitchen having been pressed into use to accommodate classes. 1921 - Old 11th Ward - Lots 1-8, 21, 22 block 3 except the west 14 feet of lot 21, and Block 4 of Oakdale Park Addition. Also lots number 7 and 8 of Weston & Meigs Fourth Addition. 1924 - addition 1950 - Added lot 20.
1953 - for comparison purposes Oakdale Christian built 1943 on Fisk is shown here. It is closer to Alexander Public School than to Oakdale Public School. 1970 - added lots 9,10,11,12,13,17,18,19 1972 - added lots14,15,16 Grand Rapids Press 26 Mar 1998 - bond issue proposal 2005: 944 Evergreen, ppn=41-18-05-158-022, part of blocks 3 and 4 of Oakdale Park. 932-944 Evergreen St SE Oakdale Christian is closer to Alexander Public School.
