Description
A part of the N ½ of the NW ¼ of Sec 1-6-12
Commencing at the intersection of the W. line of Grandville Avenue,
and the S. line of Hall Street extended West,
thence West on the S. line of Hall Street extended West 200 feet,
thence S. Westerly parallel with the W. line of Grandville Avenue to a point 150 ft S. of the S. line of Hall Street,
thence E. parallel with Hall Street and 150 feet S. therefrom, to the W. line of Grandville Avenue,
thence N. Easterly along the West line of Grandville Avenue to the place of beginning.
 

This description shows that Hall Street ended at Grandville Avenue. Hall Street was later extended West of Grandville but it then snakes steeply downhill.

1891 - Twelfth Ward, lot 200 feet on Hall Street x 150 feet on Grandville avenue. Value $3,600. 

No description of any building is given, however on a later page of rental property it states: The building, corner of Hall street and Grandville avenue, fitted up for four rooms, at the annual rental of $300.00. It's also described as a 4-room annex. It was probably annexed from Wyoming Township District #7.

1892 - Built.   Two-story and basement brick building, slate roof.  eight rooms and seated for 400 pupils.  Heated by steam and warm air closets in basement and separate stack ventilation for rooms and closets.  Cost $16,500. School built this year per Hall Scrapbook.

1895 Sanborn Fire Map: 

1896 - connected with city water and sewer.

1898 -The closets are located in the rear of the lot. (error? as only year this is said)

1899 - Four-room addition.

1905 - Plumbing condemned

1907 the 1907 map shows a 200 foot boundary on Hall x 180 foot boundary on Grandville. The Estate of D W Coit is shown west of it. Coit's Grandville Ave Add 1900 is shown south.

1907 - 4 room addition recommended.

1908 addition per Hall Scrapbook. 

1909 - purchases made for the enlargement of the playgrounds

1913 - In February ungraded manual training classes were formed for the backward and mentally retarded children. 

1914 - 2 fire escapes to be installed.

1919 addition per Hall Scrapbook.

1921 Annual Report - Old 12th Ward - Part of the NW 1/4 of Section 1, T6N R12W (Wyoming Twp) ---. to the NW corner of lot 8 of Coit's Grandville Ave Add platted in 1900   

1922 -  Addition to the north.   .Confirmed by inventory in 1922 Annual Report. In the Annual report: Owing to the crowded conditions and demands it became necessary to make additions to Hall Street and Coit avenue buildings.  Contract was let for a fireproof addition to Hall street school, to contain four school rooms, branch library room and assembly room to cost approximately $24,800 complete, and to be ready to occupancy by the middle of October.  Cost estimated at $25,000.

1953 Sanborn Fire Map Page 195 shows the school with the additions but the dates apparently aren't specific enough.  The lot addresses are 1201 and 1209 Grandville Ave SW and 600 Hall St SW.

 

1954 - newspaper clipping in Hall Scrapbook about controversy over site of new school.  State NAACP Charges Local School Site Fosters Segregation 

1956 - new school built southerly extending to  Shamrock Avenue. 703 Shamrock St SW  Homes demolished to make way. 

           

1961 Report This report also showed an old unidentified school on the same page that looks like Hall but does not exclude the possibility that it might have been Fairmount or Palmer but not Madison which new schools were included on the same page.

Hall School scrapbook  1892-1956 - homecoming to include former students and teachers since this is the last year that the present building will be in use.  --- plans had been made to build the new school behind this building extending to Shamrock Street.

The school will be grades 2-6. Younger students will attend Roosevelt.
