1. Background: for understanding land descriptions in Kent County, MichiganAlthough this article pertains to Kent County, Michigan specifically, it contains information that is applicable to not only the State of Michigan but to Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. Townships were surveyed under the Land Ordinance of 1785 Ordinances and are six miles square. This survey system was developed by Thomas Jefferson. Local government and school districts used to match townships but not anymore. Current local government jurisdiction and school districts do not necessarily match each other much less match the surveyed townships. But land and streets are still surveyed according to the Land Ordinance of 1785..And, if you weren't paying attention in Civics class, there are three levels of government: Federal, State and Local. Federal is designated by "US". State is designated by "Michigan". Local varies. It could be a township, a county, a city. The school district could be different. Local designations change boundaries and names. The US Post Office does not determine local jurisdiction. The phone company does not determine local jurisdiction. Look at your voter's registration card. You should have one. That's what tells you where you live. That's why you get the run-around when you call the government. You don't know where you live. Mailing address indicates the location of the Federal US Post Office responsible for mail delivery in the area and does not determine local government jurisdiction or land location. Local directions NE, NW, SE, SW are part of the mailing address and apply to all of Kent County. The center point is Division Avenue (a range line) and Fulton Street (a 1/4 section line) within the local jurisdiction of the City of Grand Rapids. Avenues run north and south, streets run east and west. Odd numbers are on the west side of avenues and the north side of streets.
