South Grand Rapids
Remington Add Wyoming Twp
The location of the township school is confusing because there
was a gap in the platting.
The school existed on a metes and bounds description prior to platting. The
first plat West of the school was the Village of Grand Rapids in 1887 in the NW
¼ of Section 12 by Joseph McKee. Then to the East of this plat was a parcel of
unplatted land, then S. H Remington Addition was platted in NE ¼ in 1890 which
included the existing school but the streets were not lined up between these two
non-adjoining plats. When Gardener and Stafford's Burton Heights Addition was
plated in 1903 between the Village and Remington's plats, they chose to line up
Cutler Street with the Village instead of Remington which resulted in the school
being on a jog of Cutler Street. Additional lots were purchased to the south for
school expansion in Clara's Addition, platted in 1893.
This school began as a Wyoming Township school, perhaps District #9.
