645 Davis Ave NW Grand Rapids, Kent Co, MI After the new church is built
In 1920, the old school was condemned by the City. Harry L. Mead, architect, W. W. Bradfield as consulting engineer and John McNabb and Son general contractors were hired and a new school was built with 130 feet frontage on Fifth Street extending 186 feet behind the site of the old school. The first stage to be completed was the frontage on Fifth Street. Then the old school was torn down to provide room for the southern extension being completed in November 1921.Jung In 1920 a large new addition was added onto the rear of the convent doubling its size. The old rectory built in 1884 and enlarged in 1896 was replaced by a new one built on the site of the original school made out of the bricks and wood of that school. Jung It was then that parishioners were asked to contribute $1.00 a week to pay for these buildings as a Michigan Bank Holiday prevented the funds from being secured. Jung The 1940's and 1950's showed many renovations such as installation of marble floors and to build inside restrooms. Jung
City Assessor's 1941:
A new convent was built in 1956-57; Robinson, Campau and Crowe architects with DeYoung and Bagin general contractors. Jung In 1965 the school had to be extensively renovated designed by Koprowski Associates, Owen-Ames-Kimball as general contractor. Jung
The original convent on the east side of Davis was torn down. The former convent on the west side of Davisis now being used by Steepletown Ministries, the chapel is used for daily Mass, the Parish Office is in the former mortuary, and the school has some other use, possibly pre-school.
