Although this Atlas covers all of Kent County, my web site is about the City of Grand Rapids, so I have included only brief page references for townships not adjacent to the City with just a list of pages for enlargements of small farm towns. I have included digital images of the pages covering the City of Grand Rapids. I have included references to later than 1907 annexations to the City of Grand Rapids, particularly those from 1916-1927, but only a brief approximate description of those from the 1960's.
Although early state law specified roads to be run along section lines, roads change over the years while section lines do not. These streets mentioned below are the modern names. See Addressing Rules for early and intermediate street name changes.
The City of Grand Rapids
1850: The City of Grand Rapids came into existence in 1850 by annexing Sections
19 and 30 of Grand Rapids Twp and Sections 24 and 25 of Walker Twp.
1857: the City of Grand Rapids annexed additional land in Sections 17,18, 20,
29, 31 and 32 of Grand Rapids Twp although later rescinding Sections 17, 20 ,29
and 32. The City annexed part of sections 13,14, 23, 26, 34, 35, 36 of Walker
Twp.
1891: The City of Grand Rapids annexed additional land in Sections 17,20, 29 and
32 of Grand Rapids Twp. The City annexed additional land in Sections 13, 14, 23,
26, 35 in Walker Twp. For the first time the City expanded below Hall Street
annexing Sections 5 and 6 from Paris Twp and Section 1 from Wyoming Twp.
Starting in 1916 through 1925 the City annexed land in Sections 7, 8, 17 and 25
of Grand Rapids Twp; Sections 4, 7 and 8 of Paris Twp; Sections 22 and 27 of
Walker Twp and section 12 of Wyoming Twp.
Things were quiet until the 1960's. Then the City gobbled up parts of Sections
4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23 and 27 of Grand Rapids Twp; Sections 2, 3,
9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 20 and 21 of Paris Twp; Sections 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22,
27, 34 of Walker Twp. The Cities of Kentwood, Walker and Wyoming were created to
thwart further expansion by the City of Grand Rapids and the township
governments of Paris, Walker and Wyoming ceased to exist. But Grand Rapids Twp
was still vulnerable and the City annexed parts of Sections 10 and 11 in the
1990's.
